I need to be able to check whether cookies are enabled and, if they're not, ask the client whether they want to enable them or not and, if they reply yes, enable them.

I'm pretty up on Javascript but I need to know exactly what to look for and how to automatically change the settings.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Open up your browser & type cookie into Help .

Thanks jmatt. Not sure whether you intended to be sarcastic or not but I'm certainly capable of clicking on a few help topics before I submit to this forum. Bog standard Windows help isn't going to help with background scripting, is it?

I don't want my non-technical clients messing with their internet options. I need to find out automatically (using PERL, Javascript ... whatever) if they have cookies enabled. If not, I need to enable it. It's no problem finding out the first bit - I'll just write a cookie and read it back to see if it was stored. The problem is enabling them thereafter. I'm sure there's some sort of Javascript command to do this but I'm not sure what it is.

Please don't tell me it's as simple as 'cookies.enable()' or something.

Again, apologies if you didn't mean to be sarcastic.

No , not sarcastic & your comments have not offended me .

We get all levels of skill level & i'm afraid your question has gone past mine .

Let's hope someone else has the answer .

my understanding of the situation is this - you want your client PCs to have cookies activated.

Are these YOUR PCs (on a LAN, etc)?
If so, a logon script may be appropriate.

Are these PCs simply users on the internet - when they hit your site, you want some way for the client's system to determine if cookies is enabled; if not, popup the option to turn them on.

If the second is the case, you'll either need to design a program for people to download, or to code an appropriate HTML script.

Coding a script for a website will be inherently unreliable, because users have varying browsers and varying security levels set in the browsers, so your script may end up unsupported by the user or blocked by their settings.

There are a couple of HTML forums & javascripting forums which may offer more insight into coding scripts, etc.

Hope this helps!
