Check value in database

Hello Guys.

I'm new on this. Please how can I do to check every 5 seconds a value in a mysql database using ajax and php4?

For example: I have an offline image and the value in the database is 0. Then I set the value to 1 in the database and automatically the image turn over to online image...

should be close enough. Try it out, then change the server side and Javascript to meet your needs.
