check to see if email was sent

Sent or delivered? There is no way to guarantee that an email has been delivered as it relies on the receiving MUA (Mail User Agent) responding correctly to delivery notification tags in the email header.
This can be turned off, not implemented, blocked, etc. A good thing, really, otherwise spammers could focus on email addresses that they knew had successfully received a message.
Unfortunately, mail is not point to point.
