Check status of links

I am currently creating my own website and would like to create a separate java program that would be able to check whether the links on my website are active or not. I was thinking of placing the links in the form of "

http://www.etc"

into a text file and then loop through the links. Any ideas?

I was thinking of doing something similar with my browser bookmarks.

But nowadays, if you try to access an invalid link, you get redirected to a search page - and not always the same one. So you can't just look for an error code in the returning data anymore.

So how do you reliably tell that the web site you finally accessed is the one the link is supposed to point to?
