Check internet file exists

I am using Excel to retrieve data from excel files on the internet (This I can do). But I need to check whether a file exists before performing anything. Does anyone know how to check for the existence of an excel file on the Web, i.e. does the file "http:\\

http://www.anysite.com\myspreadsheet.xls"

exist?
