Check if an href link is already visited with PHP or JavaScript

Please help me,

I am developing a huge database of URLS, placing them in categories, search options, sorting options, etc.

What I am trying to set now is when a URL link is already visited to mark it with a special "checkmark" gif in front of it. I am aware of CSS options and marking the URL link with a different color ain't my goal...

Can you please tell me if there is a way to check with PHP that a certain link is visited or not for the certain client(computer)...

What can be used is php and javascript, php only solution is better...

PHP being server side has no idea what has been visited by the client machine.

Writing info to a db about what has been visited by each client woud lead to huge db.

Put your faith in the fact that a browser knows what it has been to recently. ______________________________________________________________________
