I would encourage you to check out where the 'odd' character comes from. How was the data imported into the database?
Is there something wrong with the character encoding?
Getting rid of it is certinaly an option, however, how often have I said to myself "Oh, I don't need that..." and regretted later? Way too often.

well, after more googling i think i have found the problem but not sure how to go about resolving it. The problem is the interface i am using is windows but the data is on the linux server. when i search for the data in the server there is no strange characters but only when i am viewing the data from windows, do i see the strange characters.
still some kind of space seems to be the root cause thats producing the strange character. Also, when i try to cut and paste "Â" in php in linux the character that is represented is: "Ã" instead of "Â". is there a quick fix for this?
thanks

Don’t know if this has anything to do with your problem or not. I read your problem earlier in the day and though it was strange as I use a linux server and windows clients but have never had that problem, but I am no Linux guru, anyway whilst rooting through some file on a win machine i saw the same character. It was in a file name and the reason this character was there is because it had been recovered from a bad sector and the machine had tried to interpret the character (wrongly) is it possible that Linux is interpreting the char right and windows wrongly. Just thought I would mention it.

A problem with no solution is a problem viewed from the wrong angle
