I am running a sendmail server. I allow the server to relay emails from the internal network only.

Problem is....if I have a user that wants to check his email while he is at home(using his account on our server), he can check the emails just fine, he can even send an email to other internal account holders, but if he wants to send an email to an "outside" email account the email server will not allow the relaying because his IP address is not an internal #.

I do not want to open up relaying to everyone.

How do you more seasoned sendmail administrators handle this type of situation?

Thanks.

Hi,

Just to make sure that I understand your configuration right.
Is your user (from home) accessing your mailserver from the internet or using some kind of dialup to your own network?

If what you need it for users to access your mailserver from the internet so that they can send mail there is a simple way to do this, but since it's not 100% secure send me an email (joe@joe.net) and I will try to help. I don't want to post it in an open forum.

Thanks for the replies.

For those who are interested...

To solve the problem, I had them create a second email account on their home computer. On that account I told them to setup the "reply to" address as their work address. Use our server as the incoming email server and to use their ISP email server for their outgoing email.

This way, I don't have to worry about opening up any potential unauthorized email relays.
