chatroom applet using java.net library? 1

Hello,
I am a VB and SQL Server developer, who's good with C/C++, and have dabled with Java (long ago). I am currently working on a website project that has need of chatroom capabilities. I would assume that the best tool for the job is Java, thus using a Java applet and a ??servlet??. I need to read my Java book again to get the basics of Java, but what I don't have is documentation on the java.net library. Does anyone know of a website where I can find a basic overview of how to develop a chatroom or anything to do with the java.net library? I know that this isn't my area of expertise, but I would prefer to write the application myself, as opposed to downloading someone else's chatroom application...I learn more this way... though I wouldn't be opposed to looking at some source code examples to get me started. If it is important, my server is Windows NT 4 Sp 6a. Any websites/links would be appreciated!
