Chat room refresh

I am creating a chat room, but at the momemnt i have to refresh the whole page every few seconds or so to update the input from other users who are logged in. Is there some way to continually refresh only one cell within a table, which in effect is what my chat room is.
OR any other suggestions ?

This may seem a roundabout way of doing it, but what I have done is create a hidden frame. (A frame not visible by the user) and have that frame refresh the data. Then after it is refreshed, use javascript to refresh the parent frame with the data. So the whole page is not refreshed -- just the data part.
