I am trying to construct a simple dasboard that graphs the resutls of some queries, I am ahavng problems with the charting tool.

I have a query sums amounts by fiscal year. The results are as follows:

FYear Total
2009 367,566.38
2010 471,637.22

I want to create a bar chart. i open the chart wizard and select the query. I then select Bar Chart then selst the two field to be in the graph, FYear and Total and hit next. New he is where the confusion begins. The next panel shoes three boxes on the left
that read SunOfYear, Series and Axis. On the right there are two boxes that contain the names of the fields in the query. No matter where I drag the fields oe say that I None in summarizing the graph displays with results that have nothing to do with the query. I get Noth Soutt East or 1st quarter etc. I just want the two columns to display. If i copy the data to Excel it just display great. I am obviously missing something here. I read all I can on the web, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You need to copy your datasheet view records into th chart control's datasheet if you want to replace the default north/south. I use the chart to start building the control but then focus on setting the correct Row Source to provide the data to chart.

I've tried everything i can think of after reading your response, but I don't seem to get it. Here is the result of the query in datasheet form. I can't figre out how to get this into the graph. It will be a bar graph with two bars. If you could give a bit more detail of the steps it would help.

I do appreciate the help

FYear SumOfAmt
2009 $367,566.38
2010 $471,637.22

Thanks again

I think I just got it. I ran the query and just inserted into the North South Spreadsheet and the Graph appeard. But that seem like a funny way to do it --why can't you just reference the query directly like the Wizard directs you?

Thanks Duane

Is the "Here is the result of the query in datasheet form" the datasheet view of the chart's Row Source property? If not, it needs to be.

This should then display your chart based on the data from the Row Source.

The data was just cut from the result of the query (which I ran stand alone) and pasted in the datasheet view in the chart. I had to delete some of the row and column from the charts data sheet. When I look at the Row source Property for the Chart it gives the name of the query. But if I close the form and reopen it the chart is not correct - just one bar. I assume that it should be updated each time it is opened.

It seems like I am missing the point of the charting wizard in Access. Why can't I just go though the wizard and get results without pasting data into it? Is there a problem with the tool or the pilot on this end of the stick?

Thanks again for yor time.

If you are seeing just one bar, then I expect you have something in the Link Master/Child properties of the Chart control. If so, remove these values.

You don't ever have to paste the data into the chart datasheet unless you want to see the non-NSEW sample in the chart design view.
