Charting Months

In Cr8.5, is there a simple way to chart activities that occur in a month's timeframe? I am looking to create a column chart showing the count of an activity by month. Do I have to create a formula using..

If {table.datefield} in DateTime {2004, 01 ...~ then "January" else ....

Group the report by Month, create a subtotal for each group, and create a Group Chart using that subtotal.
