Characters missing after merging two PDF's

After inserting a pdf into another pdf in Acrobat 5, some characters are missing on the inserted page.
Even with the touch-up Text tool I can not insert the missing character, it just shows a blank.

This is really frustrating me and Adobe's Support section on their website isn't really clear on this.
Anyone have a suggestion ?
