character set

I've the following problem:
- an interbase database with some fields filled with the ansi character 186 (for first);
- some client pc that (not all) read that character sometimes as #, sometimes as 0.
I think it depends on the character set, but I don't know how to solve the problem. Can someone help me. Thanx
