Is there a way to get the character position from a string?

Thanks
JE

Do this command suit for you? 'cut -c'

tikual

Can you post an example of what you want to do (input stuff and output desired) ?

Something like this perhaps:

[tt]echo "a test with Z in the middle" | nawk '{print match($0,"Z")}'[/tt]

Annihilannic.

Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for.
