channel bank on a T1?

A channel bank typically splits the 24 channels on a incoming T1 into 24 phone lines. I have often seen them in situations where the local service comes in over a fiber sonnet ring to the area and then to a T1 coming into the building or suite, then into the channel bank to split it out.
It's not all that different from a CSU/DSU.
