Hello, my name is Jerry Cass.
I'm getting tired of having to mess with all the viruses that seem incurable on Windows 2000 Pro.
I'm wondering if the Windows 98 SE has better luck with viruses nowadays.
It seems that they are mostly written for the NTFS (2k and XP) systems.
Am I correct.
I know that you can only use 8MB of disc space for the OS, but the rest of the 80GB HDD can be seen in the Windows environment, and partitioned in the DOS environment.
Am I correct?
Is it worth it to change from 2k to 98, or should I just keep downloading fixes instead.

Seems a bit of a backward step to go from W2K to W98... What's your setup for connecting to the Internet? Dialup, Broadband? USB modem or router? What antivirus software are you using, and what firewall is in place? What service pack is installed with W2K?

Keeping your protection regularly updated ought to see you reasonably covered...

I agree with goaoz you should look into upgrading not downgrading. The support for win xp is much better than win 2k. You should upgrade to win xp pro and do all your updates. There are a few good few antivirus out there such as avg. A spyware and adware remove program is also a necessity. Don't forget to back up.

Or you could look at jumping off windows and into a linux environment (depending on what you use the computer for)

I have recently installed xandros linux and found it to look and feel a lot like windows, and it connects to windows networks very easily. and you can get it free.

You could also consider partitioning the hard drive and doing a dual boot machine, then if you want to download stuff, you can be slightly less concerned about viruses, as linux seems to have less viruses written for it out there.

I'm guessing you already have a copy of win 98 laying around, other wise I wouldn't wast the money buying one, win XP is much nicer.

Your machine, your choice. SE has a smaller footprint, there is less of a hassle when it needs to be reloaded, and it runs with older hardware.
I generally do a 6.22 partition at the front and put the OS install stuff and drivers on there then use SE boot with latest fdisk to create extended and logicals and put the OS on the D:. 6.22 is available as a dual boot and the fat32 stuff is available with a boot floppy.
When it corrupts (and they all do) the reinstall is 15 minutes or so.

What's your setup for connecting to the Internet?
********Dialup on an ISP that REQUIRES a disconnect and reconnect every four (4) hours.

What antivirus software are you using, and what firewall is in place?
********AVG Free A/V and Outpost Free.

What service pack is installed with W2K?

********SP2 only.

You should upgrade to win xp pro and do all your updates...

********With System Restore, shaky SP2, and OK-ing everything with M$ (corruption, reinstall, re-registering, etc.), I have pretty much ruled out XP.

Or you could look at jumping off windows and into a linux environment (depending on what you use the computer for)
********I have a copy of RedHat 7, on CDs, and a full copy of ThizLinux.

I have recently installed xandros linux...you can get it free.
********540 MB on dialup, breaking every four hours.

You could also consider partitioning the hard drive and doing a dual boot machine, then if you want to download stuff, you can be slightly less concerned about viruses, as linux seems to have less viruses written for it out there.

********I did that one time, and it killed my NTLoader.

I generally do a 6.22 partition at the front
********What is 6.22? Is that a FAT32, 6.22MB partition on the HDD, or DOS Version 6.22?

and put the OS install stuff and drivers on there
********How would I put the drivers on there? Can you post instructions?

then use SE boot with latest fdisk to create extended and logicals and put the OS on the D:. 6.22 is available as a dual boot and the fat32 stuff is available with a boot floppy.

********I can do an extended and logical; but, what order and all?

Thanks, Jerry Cass

The problem is probably that you connect to the internet as an admin user. This gives you unlimited powers to do anything on the machine. I found that having a limited user and using NTFS keeps the viruses to just that user. They don't infect the whole machine because the limited user does not have the correct privileges. Most of the time, the limited user is fine. It is only a pain when configuring or installing packages.

On 98, all users are admin users so you will hit the same problems as you did on 2000.
