I changed my account name on Windows XP Professional from 'Paul Robotham' to 'paul' so I could use that account with a Linux Samba Server on my network. I now can log in as both 'Paul Robotham' or 'paul' with the same password. The folder used when I log in as 'paul' or 'Paul Robotham' is 'C:\Documents and Settings\Paul Robotham'. When I log in as 'paul', in the start menu it says 'Log Off Paul Robotham', not 'Log Off paul'.

I guess I was expecting that when you change account names that the hard drive folder would change and the 'Log off Paul Robotham' would change to 'Log off paul' and that I would be no longer able to log in as 'Paul Robotham' anyhow.

Could someone please explain how I could fix my user accounts so that I would:
- Be only allowed to log in as 'paul'
- Use the the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\paul', not 'C:\Documents and Settings\Paul Robotham'
- Have 'Log Off paul' rather than 'Log Off Paul Robotham' appear in the start menu.

Thanks in advance.

The discipline used to write things down is the first step in making them a reality.

The correct answer is fix your name back to Paul Robotham, then in /etc/samba, create a file named user.map. The file will contain: paul="Paul Robotham". Your samba.conf will contain: username map = /etc/samba/user.map

For the windows answer, I suspect that the problem is because you changed the account name while you were logged on to the account. See if this helps:

You can rename the account name, but if you want the name Paul Robotham to read Paul in the start menu, you must rename the profile... it is not necessary to rename the folder on the drive itself... debonairOne

Rename your account back to the original.
create a new account with the name paul.
copy all the files etc from the first account to the new account.
delete the original account

Mosh99 has the solution but you can automate it one step further. Use Files and Settings Wizard to save your...files and settings in, say, the Shared Documents Folder then create another account with the name you want and use Files and Settings Wizard to restore them.
