Can the URL for the SharePoint Portal be changed from the servername to a different URL that more closely resembles the the company or website?

Hope this is as clear as mud. :)

Trough the use of host headers.
Your administrator should be able to help you with that, also to prevent strange problems, first make sure your site points to the right adress, using host headers. And then put the stuff on it..
