I need to format outgoing e-mail messages (AIX 4.3.3, but also needs to be applicable to 5.x) so that they originate from an address that can be replied to (incoming sendmail is disabled).

I set up an /etc/genericstable with the correct address, did a "makemap dbm /etc/genericstable < /etc/genericstable", and enabled "Kgenerics dbm /etc/genericstable" in the sendmail.cf.

I must be missing a step, because it is not taking effect.

TIA for assistance.

Try running
/usr/bin/sendmail -bi -oA/etc/genericstable
A file /etc/genericstable.db should have been created

Maybe I have the format of /etc genericstable wrong...

It's current contents are

realuser@realhost : user-name-I-want-it-to-be@domain-I-want-it-to-be.com

There isn't much to Google on for AIX here. Do I have the format right?

Try this.

in your /etc/generictables
realuser: username@domain-Iwant-tobe.com

Try running
/usr/bin/sendmail -bi -oA/etc/genericstable
A file /etc/genericstable.db should have been created
