Hi,

I would like to change the password of a user via a client machine without giving the old password. We have NIS server where we can change the password of a user on the server and make effect on all the machine. But the situation is different, I want to change the password of a user on a client machine. Can someone gives suggestion how to do it.

i think, as long as you're using a root ID - you can change the password of any user without knowing the existing one.

re client access - as long as you can use the root ID from that machine, (either via telnet or using an emulator) - you can change the password.

Hi there,
I am not using root uid.

For eg: I am in rs01 workstation,
and I am logged in as XXX and I want to change the password of XXX.

AS the server is NIS server and normally we create a user id on the user and transfer the NIS maps to all the clients. Can U help me please. I think the older version of AIX had the option of changing the password by the command mkpasswd.

I want to run passwd command on the server with rsh command.

rsh rs01 -l xxx passwd

It comes with error:

3004-709 Error changing password for "xxx"

But on the server(rs01) when su -u xxx and run the passwd command it works fine.

Can anyone help me please

Indu -- can't you do this as root? Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

Mike,

I tried to do via root. It asks for the passwd and new passwd. But when U log on next time it accepts old passwd.

I think I ahve to write a script which takes the user info from the server , change it and put it back on the server.

Have U got any other suggestion?
