Changing the email address

Previous ITs have installed our exchange on top of SBS and used remote.contoso.com as the primary mail domain. I'd like to change it to mail.contoso.com as I am having some DNS issues. I can take care of the MX records change but I am a bit concern about the exchange and what exactly I need to make changes to? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming that you mean that you have SBS with Exchange on it, all you need to do is run the Internet Address wizard in SBS and specify what you want the name to be. When you are on the screen where you specify the name, choose Advanced and put in "mail" so that it will use "mail.contoso.com" instead of the default "remote.contoso.com". If you use the wizard, it will automatically make all the necessary changes needed in Exchange.

If the server already has a public cert installed for "remote.contoso.com" then you'd need to get a new cert with the "mail.contoso.com" name on it.

But I'm guessing that focusing on the DNS configuration could be enough to fix this.

Meant to say the original exchange started on an SBS Server but it was upgraded to Standard. So far changes i need to make are ISP (modifying the priority of each), DNS, Exchange, and possible my smart host. Anything else missing?

Nope.

But when you do the Exchange stuff, you'll want to change the virtual directory URLs, and some of it will be with PowerShell. Which URLs you change will partly depend on whether you have a multi-name cert or a single-name cert. In a normal SBS environment, both internal and external URLs are set identically, and all should match the name on the certificate. In addition, the ClientAccessServer -AutodiscoverInternalURI setting should also have the cert name in the autodiscover URL, like

https://mail.contoso.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
