Changing the Domain Name

Rixride,

The only way to change the name of a Domain Controller is to demote it, change the name and then promote it back to a DC.

How big is this domain?

You could:

Dcpromo the servers and then dcpromo them again and create a new domain using the name domain.com

Or, on a fresh machine install AD and create domain.com then use admt to import all domain data from the old domain into the new. Then demote the other dcs, and promote them into the new domain. You must rejoin all other machines to the domain.

You can also try the domain rename tool, which is for 2003 server, but should work with 2K and change your DC to the new domain.

Hi,

I had the same "problem" but why don't you leave it and add at A record pointing to your External Website in your local DNS server?

Or did you give the domain name a www? I still think you can work it out with a local DNS entry.

Worked like a charm for me.

Good Luck,

Pim

Hi Hewissa

I thought the domain rename tool only works with w2k3.

It does, but I have heard it also works with Win2K with SP2 or SP3 installed.

Thanks all,

This is on a test Domain on 2 new servers with no info on them yet. No one is using the domains yet.

Hewissa I will try that tool.

I am very new to Active Directory so thanks for all your help.
