Hello,
I have set up a SharePoint environment for internal access. Currently, to log in, I am just using <servername>, and that seems to be working fine.
What I would like to do is change it so that I can access it using a custom name, ie. myIntranet
Can this change be made within SharePoint, or is it a DNS change that has to be made?

Thanks for any thoughts

It is both a change within SharePoint and a DNS Change

Look into Alternate Address Mappings within SharePoint and then add a DNS alias for the name you decide for the server/ip in question.

If it's only for testing a single wkstn. you could simply put a static entry into the file
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
