I am trying to format a Seagate ST15150 SCSI HD and change the Block size from 512 to 4096. When using the Format utility that is part of the proprietary video application that is accessing this drive, the formatting process proceeds through 100% completion, then gets stuck in the process of "Updating Disk Information...". The block size is configurable in the Format utility but it remains at 512 instead of going to 4096 that I choose from a drop-down menu. I don't even know what Block size means and have been unable to track down any additional info through Google or this site. The Operating system is Workstation 4.0, altough I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my problem.

Erm if you dont know what Block size means then why are you changing it???...... When you save a file it doesnt save it in one place, it splits it into pieces of a certain size, it will place the first part of the file on disk one, the second part of the file on disk 2, which is known as Stripping ( RAID ), the size of the piece of file placed in say Disk one and Block A is in proportion to the size of the block.Imagine a Block as a certain sized envelope which holds a piece of a complete letter. Change the size of the envelope and you can put a larger bit of paper in it.

For lots of info on SCSI go to . Block size is the way SCSI deals with file allocation - sort of analagous to clusters. So the minimum disk space allocated to a file will be one block.
. When your machine boots, you should see some text from the BIOS on your SCSI adapter that says to press some F* key or another to access the adapter setup screens. In there you should be able to format the drive in whatever block size you want.
