Hello,
Cisco is not my forte, but I have to make a change to a default route. I know how to add the route, but I am not sure if by adding a new route to replace one, it overwrites or adds a new entry?

All I need to do is change
172.28.17.0/24 [90/2195456] via 172.28.51.6, 16:35:11, Serial1

to
172.28.17.0/24 via 172.28.16.249

As we are moving off the horrid point-to-point to a nice VPN.

Thanks for all of your help, this is my first post in the cisco area, but the feedback in the Avaya area has been amazing.

adding a new default route will over write the old one or you can use the type in the command you used to add the route just put a no in front of it that will erase it. then type in the command to add the new route and that will take care of it.

Adding a second static route for the same destination to a different next hop will not overwrite the current static route to that same destination. Instead the router will see two valid paths to the same destination and attempt to load balance the traffic across both links. If one of the paths is no longer valid you will see 50% packet loss.

First remove the current static route by putting a "no" in front of it and then add the new route.

This route appears to be an EIGRP route. To remove this route, you'll need to stop the router (172.28.51.6) from annoucing it.

By adding a static route for the 172.28.17.0/24 route, you will however override the EIGRP route for this router. Just type "ip route 172.28.17.0 255.255.255.0 172.28.16.249".

By adding the static route, the new route will have an administrative distance of 1. The old EIGRP route has an administrative distance of 90 (higher distance) and won't be used.
