Changing Report from DBASE to ODBC

I'm new with ODBC but have been writting VERY basic Crystal Reports for a few years... I have a report, Crystal 8.5, that points to 3 DBase IV files. If I understand correctly the best way to distribure reports like this is to use ODBC and create simple ODBC names on my design machine that are pointing to the DBase files, and then on the clients machine do the same, create matching ODBC names and point them to their data files? Correct?

So the second part is I have older reports that I want to convert to using the ODBC names.... do I go and set the Alias to the ODBC/dbase pointer? And then they will be easier to take to cleints?

Thanks....

Alias is something entirely different, do not go there.

Click on database, convert database driver, and point to the ODBC DSN.

Thanks... wish I read this before I did the alias :O

But I did it on a backup copy so no harm...

Thanks for the info.... Actually I'm doing it with GoldMine 5.7. So have you found that Crystal 8.5 will run ok from GoldMine? What about printing in AP's?

Need some claification on the following...

>>Click on database, convert database driver, and point to >>the ODBC DSN.

Ok, to clairify. First I created 3 ODBC DSN's called GOLDMINE (for Goldmines root directory), GMBASE (GMBase directory), and COMMON (for the Common Directory). Then I restarted GoldMine and Crystal.
The I went to Covert Database Driver and selected the pdsodbc.dll [ODBC}?
Then I THINK I NEEDed to reset database locations and verify the databases? Correct? Thats what I did. When I do the verify databases there are only 3 databases but it seems to take 20 minutes to an hour per database to verify.... is that normal behavior or am I still doing something wrong?

thanks for the help, Don

This should not take this long. I suspect there is someting wrong with your ODBC DSN setup. I would call GM tech support on this one. Software Training and Support for Macola, Crystal Reports and Goldmine

Besides it taking too long.... are my steps correct?

thanks, don

A follow-up on the DSN setup.... I have the system DSN set to Microsoft dBase Driver (*.dbf) is that correct?
