Hi all,
Apologies if this isn't the most precise forum for this question. I'm using RDP to connect to a win2003 server. I have a saved .rdp file on my XP desktop machine that I use to connect to the server. I created a *completely separate* .rdp file with different credentials. Yet when I go back to the first .rdp file and dbl-click it--it logs onto the server under the second .rdp file's credentials.

What on earth is the purpose of "saving" a separate .rdp file with differnet credentials if it has no real effect? It's as if Windows just looks at the last credentials under which you signed onto that server and uses those, completely ignoring the ones that were supposedly "saved" in the .rdp file.

Can anyone shed light on this?
Thanks,

jsteph,

I don't have a solution for you but I do feel your pain. I have this problem with the newer RDP clients but not the older ones.

Depending on how many servers you need to connect to and if this is you as the admin and not your users connecting to servers, check out the Remote Desktops MMC snap in as part of the Admin Pack; it does save the creds. right and personally I find is a lot easier for keeping everything straight when I'm working on a bunch of machines (even client desktops)

That used to happen to me all of the time, until I figured out that I had to rename the file and save them elsewhere... but I do agree that you should use the solution above.. It works a lot better and if you more than 3 RDP connections saved, it reduces the hassles...

I look in the mirror and what do I see...

Folks I stopped using RDP clients, and instead am using the Remote Desktops MMC that's available in the Windows 2003 Support Tools. I have a left hand pane with all the servers I support and just access them at will. No need for separate .RDP files. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips about the mmc snapin. I think we have that here on a disk and I'll check it out,

Hi all,
OK, I checked out what i *think* is the right snap in, I have a TSMMC.MSC, and I can set up different rdp nodes.

But they show up in a tiny window on the right pane, and setting the screen size larger then comes up with a totally blank pane. I want it to bring up it's own window (I tried 'new window from here') and have it be just like the mstsc window, with the yellow envlope bar at the top center.

Is this the correct snap in?
Thanks,
--Jim

It is the correct snap-in, but instead of manipulating the screen size change the settings for the RDP connection on the left hand pane to 1024x768 resolution

Yes, that's what I did. I went into Properties and set the screen size. The only one that seems to work is 640x480. My normal desktop is 1024x768, and I know that would cause scrollbars in the rdp box but that's fine, I just want the larger area and it won't do it.
