I have a laptop running a DVD/CD drive and a DVD R/RW drive. Because I live in the States, most movies I have are all the same region setting. However, I recently obtained a DVD of car races from Japan. REGION 4. Each time I use this, I get a message that says I only have 4 times to change the setting before it stays locked on the last set one. I want to know if there is a way to change the regional setting of a DVD when it's recorded. That is to say, can I make a copy of it in my R/RW drive and change the setting on the copy so that it won't keep changing my main region setting each time I watch it. Is this possible? If not, can anyone tell me how to get around the regional change issue??

Thanks in Advance,

Assuming that it's not a copyrighted movie, I can only say that you can look into software like DVD Shrink. On the options before you make a backup, there is an entry to make it "region free".

Keep in mind that this site does not engage in many discussions concerning DVD authoring (due to copyright infringement possibilities). Go to a site like or for advice and tutorials.
