Hello,

I have a program that automates some simple data input in MS Word. The problem I have is, depending on the configuration of the users machine, when I have the document saved out it asks the user to save the normal.dot template, then says it is already in use. If the permissions are changed on normal.dot to allow full control, it works.

Is there a way to change this programatically so the user doesn't have to find and do it mannually? Would this require administrator control?

Thanks for your help.

You should ask for help in a Word forum.

Usually, when Word prompts to save normal.dot it means an addin (presumably your program) has done something unexpected and Word experts will be able to steer you in a better direction.

I see the question pop up often, but the answers always go into enough specifics there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.

I think word uses the normal.dot when creating new files as a base for them. In my programs i create a template file of my own, place it with my program files, and use it to create the new files based on them. I dont get those errors.

Thanks for responding danfreeman and white605. I do have templates already created that I'm saving out.

I guess my question, although MS Word in nature is really one about automating a windows function through FoxPro. That function is changing the permissions behind the scences for a specific file. Thanks for your answers though.

Changing permissions is a network administrator's role, not an application's. If I had an application that changed permissions on the fly, I would immediately uninstall it.

There's a word for software that does that: malware.

Yeah, I kind of figured that would be the case. Thought I'd ask though. Is there a way to read the permissions ahead of time, so I could provide some error handling. Make it a little more user friendly?

Thanks.

Yeah, probably.

I'd prefer fixing the app (or the user's environment) so it doesn't cause permission problems, though. ;-)
