I have a Word template (.dotx) which has six levels of headings defined. These headings are not numbered, and I want to change to legal-numbered headings (1., 1.1, 1.1.1,.etc.) without altering the rest of the template. This installation of Office2007 on XP Professional does not offer the legal-numbering option.

What can I do?

Without seeing the document, I believe the answer is to set up a numbered list and link each level to the heading you want it linked to. I am not sure about legal numbering being missing from your version and how that will work. I know in my numbered list options, I can go in and define my own multi-leveled list and just type in the 1.1 and such.
