What do I change in Internet Explorer so that any downloaded .doc files open with Microsoft Word? Right now it opens in wordpad.

Can you not control this via Folder Options/ File Types, and set the program you want to open .doc files?

Hold shift, right click on .doc file
Click -> open with... then choose program
Locate the MS Word file and click ok
Put a check in Always use the selected program to open this kind of file

On your local PC go to a folder that contains .doc files.
Right click on any .doc file and choose the option OPEN WITH, CHOOSE PROGRAM, MICROSOFT WORD and check the check box: ALWAYS USE THE SELECTED PROGRAM TO OPEN THIS KIND OF FILE

That should sort the problem,
