Halfway through my book (each chapter in a separate file, all of which have the same master pages) I find it necessary to change the margins and am having trouble changing the master pages. Changing the margins in File>Document Setup change the Document Master but not the master pages I have created. Changing the master pages manually creates an odd looking situation with extra vertical bars. Please don't tell me I need to remake all these publications.

The simple answer is to create additional Master pages with margins as required.

Sadly, it is not possible to import master pages from one publication to another, like styles.

Thanks Big John. It works, but as you implied, it is laborious when several publications are involved.

Yes, I've been there too.

The trick (with hindsight) is to create a template in advance. But even then there are short-comings if you need to amend the original layout.

If your documents are pre-dominantly whole pages of text all linked to styles, it's possible to import and re-flow the text into a new publication, but it still requires a thorough check of each page and images will have to be-re-placed individually.
