I have a NT4 domain with several BDCs. I recently shut one down. A user at that location changed her password two days after it was shut down. For the next couple of days she had intermittent success logging in to her computer and then finally, no success at all. She gets the message that no domain controller is available. (Odd that it wouldn't log her in using cache). I logged in using our tech support login. It let me in. I checked the logonserver (set logonserver) and it was the downed BDC. I presume the login was using cache. I logged out and then logged in using my account, which had never been used on this machine before. No problem, logged me in, logonserver was the BDC I would have expected. Workstation is XP Pro, SP2. Tried deleting the profile which didn't work, but was able to delete the ntuser.dat file. No success. Only way to get user in was to create new userid.
1. Why wouldn't the workstation allow the user in using cache?
2. Is there a way to change the logonserver for a user without the user being logged in?
I'm curious to see if I experience more of the same as other users passwords expire.
