Changing layers' colors.

I am having so much trouble trying to get this page to be colorful. I've done a few sites before and have never gotten shafted like this. I have a few layers on my site right now that i would like to add some color to. I select them and where it says bgcolor i choose the color. I then choose preview and all it shows is the text inside these layers. there is no color to be found besides the main page's bg color. Please, somebody help.

You'll need to go into code view, and use CSS to give the layers colors. try something like:

<div id="somelayer" style="background-color:#FF0000;">
