I have an old Toshiba 310CDS Laptop where I want to change the hard disk but are not sure how to go about it. It doesn't auto detect like new pc's today and there doesn't seem to be a bios that you can boot into and setup the hard disk settings.

Do I have to boot off a floppy with some utility program or what????? Any ome had to do this?

On older desktops you could install a newer drive that was not recognized by the BIOS by using a Drive Overlay [software] available from the drive manufacturer. Essentially it lies to the BIOS about the size of the drive and sets up full size access. Downside, probably will have to install Windows fresh so it install correctly. Win98 may not work [laptop limit?] but Win95 should.
