Hello again.

Today I've just tried to reduce the size of a jfs filesystem under AIX 5.3. I reveived this error:

chfs: Cannot reduce size of file system

Nevertheless you could perfectly extend its size.

I was in a hurry so I erased the filesystem, made another one with JFS2 type and the wished size.

So was it possible to reduce the size of a JFS filesystem?

I'm looking forward to your opinions.

Many thanks in advance...

So you basically recreated the filesystem? I wouldn't say this is the same as the desired aim of 'reducing' the size of an existing filesystem though.

No you can only reduce a jfs2 filesystem, the method to reduce jfs is backup/restore.

There is however a tool from compunix that will reduce a jfs filesystem but it costs...

Sorry - meant to add ....though it has the same effect.

So I am going to take into account from now on!

Thanks

And AFAIK the compunix tool also requires a short unavailable time (unmount/mount) for JFS shrink operation.
