My company is currently using a Public IP addressing system for its Offices, i want to change so that we are using a proper Private address, i also want to enable our main office to have more node IP's. We are currently using a subnet of 255.255.255.0.

What would you recommend as a good subnet to use if i want increase the amount of nodes by double, we also have about 25 remote offices that will require a new IP range, but do not need the amount of host IP addresses increased.

Thanks

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) reserved the following three blocks of the IP address space for private internets:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

How many host addresses do you want available?

For a quick subnet for double the range, I'd use

172.16.0.0 /23

That'll give you about 510 usable addresses.

Network: 172.16.0.0
Gateway: 172.16.0.1 (may vary upon preference)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0
Broadcast: 172.16.1.255

Usable range: 172.16.0.1 - 172.16.1.254

I'm kind of partial to the 172.16.0.0 /12 range. Many forget it exists, so it's a little different to have.

I like to stay away from using the 192.168.x.x in the office, since many home routers use that range. VPN clients are less likely to have conflicts if there is no chance of overlapping subnets.

Something you'll want to think of though is how many hosts (like Andyleates said). Do you want one big broadcast domain, or do you want/need to break it up into separate subnets and go with VLANs?

Good luck with your project. Hope this helped out.

Hey bierhunter.... nice answer!! That should work good for them...

Going further on this thread, I see that i should change my current office 192.168.x.x network to 10.x.x.x most probably. The whole network is set up with remote access between 2 buildings using wireless, firewall, VPN, terminal server and now an IP phone system. Is it worth the time and effort required to change the whole setup to avoid problems that i don't have now but might have in the future?

Kinda new to this subnetting thing, how exactly do you set it up? We are using 10.1.10.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and have 1 domain running on a windows 2000 server. I understand the gateway and everything, but what is the broadcast?

thanks

nevermind - should have read other threads first....figured it out. Thanks a lot bierhunter!
