I am going to be forced to change the IP address on my Groupwise server (changing Internet Provider). It is currently running Netware 6.0 sp2 and Groupwise 6.0 sp2. The POA and MTA are both running off of this server. I have a TID with how to make changes for Netware 6.0 just wondering about any Groupwise specific issues.

Has anyone had to do this before and can provide some tips?

Thanks!

Hi ductTape!

We changed a our IP/ISP a while back. My suggestions are more towards the ISP.

- Let your users know there is a chance email received during this transition may be lost. Though most systems will resend to your addresses, it is possible.

- Speak with your new ISP about the day and/or time of change, how long it will take them to update/change your MX records. You don't want them to give you the, ". . . we can make our changes anytime between 10am and 5pm" answer. Ideally, you want to make your changes on the server, while on the other line you tell your ISP, "OK. Make the changes now." Some MX records can take longer to propagate throughout certain routers (EIGRP/OSPF v2) and could actually take up to 24-48 hours for a complete update.
-- meaning someone in Utah may have to wait a day or 2 before their emails get through to your people.

- Find out what your new IP ranges are (if any). Even though you are more than likely only going to use one, usually they will assign 5 IPs for you. This is good to know for the future, and later down the road, if you look to activate/use those addresses.

Good Luck with your switch.

Let me take Michigan's advice one step further. If your domain name is hosted by your old provider, have your new ISP assume the domain hosting BEFORE the transition (preferably about a week before). Have them add a secondary mail exchange record now for the new IP address. You can have multiple mail exchange records (one with the old address, one with the new). That will keep mail flowing without interruption.

Also, you may want to take this opportunity (changing IP addresses) to implement NAT on your LAN. That will make any future IP address changes a breeze since only the firewall or router has to change, you don't have to mess with servers, workstations, etc.

Did anyone have any problems with the actually changing the IP address on the Groupwise server. I have read a TID specific to Netware 6 and I was really wondering if there was anything else involved because of Groupwise.

The only IP addresses I need to change are my router, firewall and this Groupwise box (it is on the DMZ of the firewall). Everything else will be taken care of with the NAT I have setup on the firewall.

Thanks!!

Changing ip address on a netware 6 server seems to work BUT imanage, remote manager, ifolder, netstoreage and all that jazz may really struggle if you try and configure them after. Novell have released the TID's you have read but I have spoken to Tech support guys direct and they have no procedure that they guarentee success after the change.

If you change ip address or server name on Netware 6 be ready for grief later. Lee Smith
