When I'm on the homepage or most others for that matter, there is an icon top left, presumably set by the style sheet. How can I replace that with my own .gif logo
I don't have any special software just office tools

go to site actions > site settings > modify all site settings
Under look and feel, click "Title, Description and Icon", and add the URL under Logo and URL description. You will first have to upload a image file to an image library.

I should have said I'm using Sharepoint 2003 which has on the toolbar a category Site Settings, but under that there are three sub categories Administration, Customization and Manage my Information.

I have been through all these I think and can't find the correct place.

In Portal Administration, under General Settings, click "Change portal site properties and SharePoint site creation settings". Put the link to your logo in the "Custom Portal Site Logo" textbox.

Pity the insomniac dyslexic agnostic. He stays up all night, wondering if there really is a dog.

PS By Portal Administration I mean the page you get when you click on the Site Settings link :)
