Due to increasing dissatisfaction with my current hosting company, I'm about to change webhosts.

1. Are there any obvious 'gotchas' that I should look out for?

2. What do I need to do about DNS - or will my new host be able to look after this?

3. Any action required about Google etc?

4. Do I need to take any seperate actions for email addresses?

I will be asking these questions of my new host, but your expertise would be appreciated.

Hi John,

1) When you are transferring everything over, you need to leave the old account active for around 72 hours at least so that you have everything resolving to the new server before the old one stops responding to requests for your domain. If you don't do this, your site and e-mail will go down.

2) You would be provided with nameservers and you would need to contact whoever controls your domain (registrar) and either request that they change the nameservers over or if your registrar has a control panel then you could do it yourself from there.

3) You don't have to worry about any of the search engines, they won't be affected. The only time they would be affected would if you you didn't leave the account active as mentioned in 1 above.

4) All of your e-mail addresses would need to be setup on the new server (the same for the site/everything else). During the 72 hours I mentioned above, e-mail can arrive on either your old or new host's servers so you need to check both servers during this period.

Hope this helps
