Good day all!

I have a Netware 5.1 sp6 server that I would like to move to a rack mount server. The server in question is the master-replica and is one of three NW 5.1 sp6 servers. It has just one drive with a SYS volume. Does anyone have any suggestions? Obviously, I'm looking for the easiest and least painful path. I went out to Novell's website and they have a document describing such a procedure using DSMaint? I've never used it an don't feel comfortable. There are no external tape drives attached to this server. Backups are done remotely using Backup Exec v9 remote agent for Netware.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

dsrepair
Move Master replica to another server before any changes.
derepair
Prepare new server - Install NW5.1 with same SP and with same DS

Copy files from old server to the new.
Remove Directory from the new server.
Remove Old server from the NDS
Delete all objects belong to the Old server
dsrepair
Change name of new server for the Old's server name
Install New server into NDS.
dsrepair
Copy back master replica.

I forgot .
run tbackup.bat before copying files and trestore.bat in the end.
It will restore all trustees

iwhile above would work - not a route i would go down

i'm assuming this also hosts your ca which means you would need to recreate

to my mind 2 options

1. dsmaint option - there is an excellent tid on this and it really does work well

2. use the migration wizard - never used it on 5.1 and a lot of people dislike this method but it's always been ok with me

so in summary i personaly would dsmaint it
also maybe a good time to put some other volumes on it - i hate to see stuff on sys

Personally, my choice would be this:

- Delete the security container.
- Install the new server from scratch and insert into the tree in same location as old server. This will cause new server to recreate security stuff and become CA. (however if you may need to reconfigure the certificates on the other servers)
- Leave old server in tree, but move master replica of [root] to new server
- create new file structure that uses more than the SYS volume.
- Use the Server Consolidation Utility or other program to copy files from old to new server. Server Consolidation Utility should backup and restore trustees. Or there are other utilities.
- don't mess with moving DS from server to server at all. Leave the stuff alone, it's not for amateurs.
- Install any printer or other services onto the new server.
- Write an obituary for your old server and remove it from the tree. Reroute all login scripts to the new server. Get used to the new name. Or better yet, leave the old server in the tree and save your MP3's to it, free up space for work related stuff on the new server.
- If you wanted to, after the old server is out, you could rename the new server to the old server name but that could introduce other issues.
