I am working on a book with a lengthy and heavily footnoted Introduction and sparsely footnoted body text. I would like to have numbered footnotes for the Introduction and 'symboled' footnotes for the main text, yet the footnote options apply only to the document and not to individual sections - is there a way to get two styles of footnote within a document, or even a workaround other than dealing with the introduction as a seperate document and splicing them together at PDF stage?

You could do the intro as a separate document and combine them in a Book file. That way printing, numbering, output, etc. can be done at the same time. Still a small workaround, but not as bad as having to put them together in Acrobat.
