Changing file server's domain/forest membership in W2k3 1

I manage two company's (Company-A and Company-B) W2k3, single-domain forests (Domain-A and Domain-B), installed in two separate office sites (Site-A and Site-B), connected via Cisco PIX's and mutual trusts in ADDT.

At one time, Company-A had personnel in both office sites, so at Site-B a file server (FS1) was installed as a member of Domain-A, though the server was serving files for both companies and forests. However, Company-A has now consolidated all of their personnel into Site-A and have moved all of their data off of FS1.

Currently, FS1 continues to serve files exclusively for Domain-B and Company-B, but remains a member of Domain-A.

I'd like some advice on what I might expect in moving the file server from Domain-A to Domain-B. For instance: Will the shares need to be recreated? Will the ACLs remain intact? Will file and folder ownership be changed?

In theory--or more specifically, ideally--there would be little or no re-configuration necessary since the mutual trusts remain in place and the ACLs would look identical regardless of domain membership between the two domains.

Anyone care to elaborate?

Thanks.

You can expect the need to recreate the shares. I believe your users ACLs and ownerships should be OK on the files since you have the trust in place.

If this is a DC you will need to run DCPROMO to remove the AD attributes on the server. Then you can join it to the new domain.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
