Changing DSL background

I've got DSL installed on 16Mb 120MHz P1 laptop. Works OK except I find it difficult reading the statistics on the background because it is put on top of a weave pattern.

I found a menu option to change the background but it doesn't have an option for no background. If I press the color button, a dialog pops up and the whole app promptly disappears.

How do I get rid of the weave pattern and just have a plain colour background? Is there a non gui way, like modifying some config file of some sort?
 
in Gnome:

gconftool -s --type=string /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /path/to/image.ext

is the way to change the background picture...

or you may wish to take a look at XSETBG ...
