Is there a way I can change the domain name on a backup and primary domain controller?

Yes you can. To change the name of the domain you have to change it at the PDC first. Login as admin at the PDC and go to the Network icon in the Control Panel and on the Identification tab, press "Change". This should allow you to change the domain name. Enter new domain name and after a few minutes you should see "Welcome to New Domain" msg box. Press OK, and that's about it.

Repeat the procedure at the BDC and then at all the standalone servers and workstations. Do this drill when there's less activity on the network. Probably at night, so that there's no disturbance for the users. But when you do it, do it all at once.

A word of caution: think twice if you have a large network to manage and have trust relations with other domains.

Best of luck!
