What would the affect of changing the permissions on the dex.ini file have on users and printing? I would like to blank out the last user ID because we use citrix and many usres access it. As well, when this file is writeable, we get about 50 lines of text that user's printers have added. Do the user's printers need to be in the dex.ini file in order to be able to print?

There is no effect to printing or users, If anything I think it has helped performance. You can delete all of those print settings lines. I have been using the dex.ini file in the read only for quite sometime now. What you want to remember though is when you do any kind of install, upgrade or anything that uses the dex.ini you must uncheck the read only. To remove the last user use REM SQLLastUser=

Don't do it.

You will break a number of third party addons which store settings in the Dex.ini. I know that anything I have written either under the Winthrop banner or under MBS banner uses the Dex.ini. This includes the Omni Tools, Omni Price, Named Printers, Advanced Security, Field Level Security and Australia's Business Activity Statement code.

The most common use for the Dex.ini is during the installation of the code, but I would still recommend against setting it for read-only.

I did write a solution to the problem with Winthrop's Omni Login product which will clear the SQLLastUser settingfor you. Omni Login will also remember the last company you logged into, unless you ask it not to.

Assuming we are not installing any more third party products and the install is stable (ie named printers and all other products have added their code to the dex.ini), why would we still need things to be added to this file? It's a simply change to change it to read-only and it's free.

I have 3rd party products and have had no problems what so ever with it being read only. Just make sure you uncheck read only when doing installs, upgrades, hot fixes.
