can anyone help me learn about changing a program's interface and colour scheme?

I have a C program that I did not write, however ii is a very good learning tool for a project I am working on. I want to learn how to change its interface, and colour scheme.
I have been grabbing screen shots and changing its colours - the hard way.

can anyone assist?
