I have created a layer with a transparent background with a shape in the middle of the layer. Lets say a square. I have filled the square with the color white. I then create a new layer by copying the above mentioned layer.

How can I change the color of the square on the new layer?

I know that with a square I can just copy the square and fill it with a new color but what about complex shapes. I would like to be able to draw the shape once and change the color of the shape depending on the layer it is on

thanks in advance for any responses

Hi,

When you have whatever shape it is on the new layer you can either goto SELECT|FOAD SELECTION (hold Ctrl+Left Click on layer in layers palette) then fill in the marquee with whatever color.

OR

Goto IMAGE|ADJUSTMENTS|HUE/SATURATION (Ctrl+U)and use the sliders to change the color of the shape.

Hope this helps! NATE

Sorry I didn't quite explain that properly and I had a typo.

On the original layer LOAD SELECTION then you will get a marquee, then make a new layer, then fill the marquee in.

If you were to duplicate the layer then load the selection then fill it in, the edges would look slightly multi-colored.

Hope this helps! NATE

Great that is exactly what I was looking for!!

thanks

If you're in Photoshop 6, you can also just double click the layer and add a color fill. This would also have the benefit of reducing the number of layers by 50% (each layer can have two colors, depending on whether the layer style is visible or not).
