Hi,

I have been advised to change some of the settings on AIX 4.3.3 but I am not exactly certain how to do them and when is the best time to change them i.e. when oracle database is not up and running or any oracle users are currently logged on?

Settings to change;

1. update aio settings via smitty

minservers 10 (current value is 1)
maxservers 20 (current value is 10)
maxreqs either 16384 or 32768 (current value is 4096)

2. I am not sure how to update the following setting (by smitty, if so how?)

maxuproc 200 or 215 (current value is 128), should this value match the value of processes parameter in oracle init.ora file?

3. iostat - should that be true, at the mo it is set to false?

Lately I keep on having a lot of problems with oracle listener hanging frequently and no error messages being generated from oracle or aix errpt. But many say it is due to low parameter values from aix kernal?

I have compared the values from old J40 server to new F50 server and it seems the settings value are quite low in F50.

Is it possible to change the settings while oracle users are logged on? What impact will it have?

Thanking you all in advance.

Regards

Hi. In my experience, Oracle doesn't take too kindly to parameter changes whilst it's up, and it follows that your system will be unavailable whilst the changes are made. You should probably then reboot, as the changes won't take effect until you do so (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the case in a Solaris environment). Others with more AIX experience should be able to advise on your other queries - no doubt they'll be along soon!

The aio settings you wull have to reboot the server in order for them to take affect. SO you know how to do that
i.e. smitty aio

number 2. and 3. , smitty
Change / Show Characteristics of Operating System
maxuproc is the first value
and iostat = true is Continuously maintain DISK I/O history

basically change all the settings and then reboot the server.
If you still have problems
Check your listener.ora file has correct entries
what database version or versions have you got installed on your system i.e. 8.0.5 and 8.1.7 or only one
The other thing is set your oracle environment up and run lsnrctl status , check everything is up ..

Hi HTH,

Oracle has been upgraded to 8.1.7.3 on AIX 4.3.3 and for some reason the listener (lsnrctl) hangs frequently, no ORA error messages only TNS error message which says something like protocol adapter error.

It has to be an o/s problem as the only way I can stop it hanging is to kill this process. Even when the listener hung, I could not query its status.

That is why I am now wondering if the current values on AIX settings is too low, checked it with values on old server.

Hello,
Update to latest level of AIX. do search on Avadh you will find tuning for oracle.
